Happy Holiday Season! Use Your Personality Strengths this Season

The holiday season is here. More than any other season, this is a time for connecting with family, friends, coworkers and colleagues. The feeling of social support and holiday cheer can give you the energy and inspiration you need to pursue your health and life goals. The holidays can also be draining however. Pace yourself, especially if you have an introverted preference. Make sure to find that quiet time to rejuvenate before the next party or social event. Even those of us who have an extroverted preference can find we are socializing too much and lose track of “me time” to get centered around our personal and health goals.

We can also face a lot of unhealthy temptations this time of year at work and at home. How can you manage more easily? Balance participating in the holiday festivities and staying on track with your health goals. What is it that you truly enjoy and that comes easily during this holiday rush?

Consider:

Do you enjoy organizing and planning the parties and get togethers? As an organizer, can you make sure you are including foods and activities that allow you to stick with your goals? Perhaps it is the coordination of the activities that is so enjoyable. Planning and organizing can get you so energized that you are not even thinking about food. You can then avoid the temptation to overeat healthy snacks.

Do you enjoy affirming and supporting the activities of those in your social circle? Showing that you care is an important part of the holidays. Perhaps boosting their spirits and affirming them during the holiday rush can give you the boost you need to keep an eye on your goals.

Do you enjoy the memories that the holiday season brings? Focusing on the positive memories can help you enjoy the season without overdoing it. You can get inspired by the traditions and a sense of continuity year to year.

This will energize you to stick with your true north.

Do you revel in taking in all of the pleasant sensations of the season?

Perhaps you can focus on the sights, sounds, aromas…without needing to consume as much of the treats. Savor the foods you do eat. Be mindful, slow and purposeful about the tastes and textures as you eat.

Do you enjoy the season because it allows you to pursue your deeply held values–about family, friends, giving, and sharing? Take this time as an opportunity to reaffirm your values.

Do you enjoy this season because it is a time of reflection on what has transpired this year and tuning into your vision and insights for next year?

What positive changes do you foresee for 2013 in achieving and sticking with your life and health goals?

Do you enjoy the holidays because this is an opportunity to pursue various creative possibilities for decorating, baking, and gift giving? Are you inspired by the patterns you see in how your family and friends celebrate this season? Take this time to ponder new possibilities for the new year.

What are various ways you can reach your goals this year?

Is the holiday season a time for you to reflect on and affirm the meaning it has to you? Take time to assert your version of acknowledging and celebrating the season.

As you celebrate the holidays, focus on your preferences and strengths. You will get energized to achieve your life and health goals now and in the new year.

Happy holidays everyone!
